Maryland Guide: Making Decisions

Making important decisions about your vacation will be easier when you know more about Maryland's different regions

Much Ado About Maryland

After you've researched Maryland, you'll be able to make informed decisions concerning the details of your trip. All of the information you've compiled will help you to weigh the options available to you on your vacation.

One of the most important decisions that you'll have to make concerns where you'll stay. Given that Maryland has five different travel regions, each with unique character, it'll be difficult to decide which ones you want to visit. Other decisions include lodging, activities, and transportation to Maryland and around the state.

Where to Go

Maryland has a lot to offer, as can be seen by its various travel regions. They include the Western, Capital, Central, Southern, and Eastern Shore regions.

The Western region is characterized by a great variety of outdoor pursuits. In the warmer months, visitors can enjoy mountain climbing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, swimming in Maryland's lakes, and whitewater rafting. The winter months provide vacationers with the opportunity to ice fish and snow ski. Early Railroads now host scenic train rides and historic tours.

The Capital Region was once home to farm land that was donated in order to designate the country's capital of Washington, D.C. As such, the surrounding area is home to many high-tech industries and research centers. Visitors can enjoy a boat ride on the canal through scenic C&O Canal National Historic Park, or test their limits at the exciting Six Flags America, Maryland's largest amusement park.

The Central Region of Maryland is home to the state's prominent metropolitan centers. It's capital, Annapolis, and it's largest city, Baltimore are found here. Along the Chesapeake Bay, visitors can find abundant seafood in this region. The Central Region consists of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Piedmont Plateau, so the variety of industries found here will intrigue visitors.

The Southern Region is characterized by its southern influences. Bordered by the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers, as well as the Chesapeake Bay, this region also boasts plentiful seafood. Museums featuring ancient fossils as well as modern industries will help travelers to appreciate the history and lifeblood of the region.

The Eastern Shore region is characterized by flat farmland and a great many natural and historic landmarks. Visitors can experience the rich history and natural beauty via boat rides throughout the region's waterways. Winding roads also provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the countryside by either bicycle or car ride.

After you've settled on a region of Maryland to vacation in, you can then decide on the city or cities you want to visit.

Once You're There

Because the Old Line State has so many activities and attractions to offer, it may be difficult to decide which ones you'll want to include in your Maryland vacation. You'll have to consider your main priorities when planning your trip. If you desire to experience the cold of winter and the excitement of skiing and sledding, then you'll want to book your trip for the winter months and stay in the Western region. If you want to indulge in fresh and delicious seafood, you should stay on Chesapeake Bay, or on one of the rivers flowing through the state. For those who love history, however, anywhere in the state will be sure to please.

If you're traveling with others, it's important to be considerate of their preferences and desires when planning your trip. Where you stay and what activities you plan to partake in may be fun for some, but may not be for others. Staying out all night may seem like fun for some of the people in your group, while others may want to enjoy a nice relaxing vacation. You should try to compromise so as to please everyone in the group. And if you are traveling with children, you may want to plan ahead for kid-friendly activities and accommodations.

With its giant Chesapeake Bay, flowing rivers, happening cities, and gorgeous countryside, Maryland provides a wide variety of wonderful travel experiences. No matter what your interests may be, Maryland is sure to satisfy.
